The new park is open!

After watching construction from the balcony for a year, we were excited to be one of the first visitors in the new park in the West Loop. The soon-to be-named Chicago Park District “Park 542” at Adams & Sangamon Streets opened yesterday and quickly became populated with neighbors, who had been eagerly awaiting a place to enjoy the outdoors with family, friends—and of course, dogs.

The new park features large hilly, grassy areas, patches of wildflowers and grasses, a spacious playground for kids, dog-friendly area, and a clever “misting station” at the entrance.

While taking Essie on her evening walk (now a much easier task), I was amazed by how many neighbors, kids, and dogs filled the park at 10:30 pm on a Thursday night. It’s a true testament to the power of gardens and public spaces, bringing together families, friends—and a community.

Note to West Loop neighbors: A grand opening ceremony for the park will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 11 am. Details here. The movie Ferris Beuller’s Day Off will be shown at the new park on Sept. 9.
