New addition: ‘sun parasol’ red mandevilla

On a corn plant “scouting trip” to Home Depot this weekend, I was distracted by a group of deep red, tropical-looking plants called Sun Parasol Mandevilla. On a whim I picked one up, thinking it would look great with the hibiscus tree currently residing on the balcony—plus I really wanted to buy one of the super-cheap ceramic planters at Clover’s Garden Center pop-up greenhouse before it closes this week.

Apparently, the Sun Parasol is a new variety of mandevilla hybrid that is easy to cultivate and stays true to color. The sales associate at Home Depot told me the mandevilla will vine and climb—which I’m not quite sure how I will handle yet— but I was intrigued by the fact that you can bring it indoors over the winter. So I thought I’d give a mandevilla a try.
